Citadel of the Host of Stars
For a school assignment, I had to create a multiplayer level for the FPS (First Person Shooter) Unreal Tournament 3. The level I created was made in UDK (Unreal Development Kit) and is a 4 player death-match map. The level is based on the ruined city Osgiliath, from the Lord of the Rings franchise.
My main focus with this assignment was getting 'the flow' right. I wanted players to move through the map naturally, without encountering corners or bends which felt out of place. I tried to achieve this by cutting off corners, using lights to draw attention and using small buff-routes to guide the player through a corridor. Each turn should feel as a meaningful choice, but should also feel natural, depending on what the player wants.
A second point I focused on was to create viable strategies for everyone. This means that the level has to support close-range, mid-range and long-range combat, as well as the right conditions for each weapon. As a side-effect, players may have to alter their strategy and play style based on their location and the opponents.
As the map is based on Osgiliath, I found it very important to try to keep the design philosophy of Osgiliath intact. Osgiliath was once a big city, with hundreds of towers, walkways and chambers. One of the key elements which I worked into my level is the river through the middle. However also the many layers in height were thought of, as well as the many pathways and corridors which connect all the main areas.
